Funkadelic - Electric Spanking (Deluxe) (CD)
FUNKADELICâS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED 1981 ALBUM NEWLY REMASTERED PLUS BONUS INSTRUMENTAL TRACK IN DELUXE CD MEDIABOOK PACKAGING
Masterminded by the larger-than-life figure of George Clinton, Funkadelic was a key component of his influential P-Funk empire. Funkadelicâs unique combination of Rock, Psychedelia and Soul led to the band to crossing over into the pop mainstream and gaining an international following, to become one of the most important groups in the evolution of funk.
The last in a decade-long run of Top 50 R&B albums, âThe Electric Spanking Of War Babiesâ was the bandâs twelfth studio LP and featured several players new to the Funkadelic line-up, notably Sly Stone. With its allusions to the Vietnam War and US imperialism, to paraphrase critic Robert Christgau, Clinton reached âinto the disgusting depths of his drug-addled mindâ for a project that was destined to court controversy from the start, not least for its uncompromising sleeve art which Warner Bros. demanded be changed.
Described by Christgau as âthe solidest, weirdest chunk of P-Funk since one nation gathered under a grooveâ and originally conceived as a double album, many tracks saw release on Clintonâs later P-Funk projects. Arguably, it is better for having been prĂ©cised down to a single album while still spawning two hit singles, the title track (US R&B No. 60) and âShockwavesâ (US R&B No.53).
Replicating the original âcensoredâ artwork, this deluxe reissue includes an instrumental version of the title track as a bonus and an authoritative essay by John Masouri.
